LUCENT creates light-based installations that integrate video, lighting, music, technology, and interaction, seamlessly fused with refined aesthetic sensibilities. Drawing from natural phenomena and underlying physical principles, LUCENT’s works combine delicate expressions of light shaped by imagination with intuitive, participatory experiences, resulting in emotionally resonant spatial artworks.
Through this approach, LUCENT develops installations for public spaces, presents works at international exhibitions, and realizes lighting art and interactive art for commercial environments, as well as collaborative projects with international luxury brands.

History
Since 2007, Takahiro Matsuo, Representative of LUCENT (Lucent Design Inc.), has gained international recognition through permanent exhibitions at ARS ELECTRONICA (Austria). Building on this early visibility, he has participated in major media art festivals and exhibitions worldwide, establishing an active international presence across art, design, and technology.
In 2009, Matsuo presented the delicate interactive video installation Aquatic Colors at Canon’s “NEOREAL” exhibition during Salone del Mobile, Milan, further expanding his international profile. In 2011, he held a solo exhibition at POLA MUSEUM ANNEX (Ginza, Tokyo), followed in 2012 by another solo exhibition at ARTIUM (Fukuoka), where he presented his first lighting installation, White Rain.
In June 2012, Matsuo founded Lucent Design Inc., establishing LUCENT as a studio dedicated to creative light artworks, spatial design, and technical development. Later that same year, he presented an interactive art installation in collaboration with historical archival jewelry at the BVLGARI “Italian Splendor” Exhibition (Ginza), expanding his practice into the field of luxury brand collaborations.
Since then, Matsuo and LUCENT have developed large-scale installations and permanent artworks for leading global companies, cultural institutions, and luxury brands—delivering projects that merge artistic expression with advanced technical execution.
Selected projects include: the SEIKO showcase at Baselworld (Switzerland); permanent installations at Shiseido The Ginza; installations for Cassina ixc.; Shiseido Ultimune installations; the spherical installation Wonder Moments at NIFREL; the permanent prism artwork AURA at Conrad Osaka; the permanent artwork Mirrored Pieces at Shiseido Ginza Flagship Store; KAWAI “Crystal Rain” at Salone del Mobile (2018); TOKYO AIR at Haneda Airport International Terminal (2020); the solo exhibition INTENSITY at POLA MUSEUM ANNEX (2020); LA MER “Dreamscape” (Shanghai, 2020); PIAGET Ginza flagship window “#YourMagicTurn” (2021); Mandarin Oriental Shenzhen “AURA” (2022); Luminous Way at Enoshima Escar (2022); The Creation at UI ART CENTER (Suzhou, China) (2023); MIKIMOTO Ginza flagship windows (from 2023); K.L.V for Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai; and the Omotesando Hills Christmas Tree (2025).
In 2020, Matsuo launched EMISSION, a studio and art brand built on the concept “Light Crystallized,” focusing on original prism-based artworks. Since then, his practice has expanded across video art, interactive art, lighting art, and chandelier installations—creating immersive experiences that seamlessly integrate digital and physical domains on an international scale.
Selected Awards
In 2024, The Creation received Design of the Year in the Entertainment Lighting category at the LIT Lighting Design Awards. In 2025, K.L.V for Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai won the Gold Prize at the Japan Spatial Design Award 2025 and the Silver Award at the DFA Awards 2025 (Hong Kong), reflecting strong international recognition in spatial art, design, and lighting.

Takahiro Matsuo
CEO / Founder & Director, EMISSION
Born in 1979 in Fukuoka, Japan, Matsuo completed his graduate studies at Kyushu Institute of Design.
Focusing primarily on light-based installations that integrate video, lighting, music, objects, and interaction, he consistently creates artworks that fuse aesthetic exploration with advanced technology.
Drawing inspiration from natural phenomena and physical principles, Matsuo’s work is characterized by delicate expressions of light and emotionally resonant experiences shaped by imagination. His practice spans public art in urban and commercial spaces, international exhibitions, and collaborations with luxury brands, and he is active both in Japan and internationally.
He is also the founder and director of EMISSION, a brand and art studio based on the concept “Light Crystallized”, where he directs prism-based installations and art products, exploring new relationships between light, materiality, and space.
